▪️In a strategic discussion session organized by the Israeli website "News1" with a select group of military and intelligence experts, the "Egyptian threat" took center stage, along with concerns about "its ability to wipe out Israel".
According to a News1 report, retired Colonel Eli Dekel, former head of the field intelligence division in Aman (Israeli military intelligence), presented a shocking analysis, claiming that “Egypt has established a massive military infrastructure in Sinai whose ultimate goal is the complete destruction and annihilation of Israel,” adding that this infrastructure, which is run under the guise of “counter-terrorism,” far exceeds what is permitted by the 1979 peace agreement.
Dekel also claimed that these fortifications, bases and defense systems that Egypt has installed deep in Sinai are being managed in coordination with hostile regional powers, and constitute a strategic threat from the southern front in any future confrontation.
Dekel was not the only one to issue sharp warnings. In the same session, military expert Moshe Feiglin said: "Egypt is the one that armed Hamas," in a direct accusation that was not accompanied by concrete evidence.
For his part, political historian Dr. Moshe Brunt commented that "the whole world is trying to control Gaza, with the exception of Israel," referring to the decline of the Israeli role in the Palestinian equation.
Military engineering expert Zvi Weinberger also called for "the creation of a deep demilitarized zone inside Sinai" as a condition for ensuring Israel's long-term security.
▪️On the other hand, Israel witnessed mass dismissals that shook the Israeli military establishment.
The Israeli army chief of staff, Major General Eyal Zamir, made a series of unprecedented decisions that included dismissing and removing a number of senior officers at the conclusion of internal investigations into the army's failures before and during the Hamas attack on October 7.
According to the information, the head of the operations department during the October 7 attack, Major General Oded Siok, was completely exempted from reserve duty, as part of the personal conclusions adopted by the Chief of Staff.
It was decided to dismiss the former commander of the Gaza Division from the Israeli army, in addition to terminating the service of the former commander of the Southern Command, Yaron Finkelman, and removing him from the reserves.
The decisions also included terminating the service of the former head of the operations brigade in the military intelligence division.
These measures point to one of the largest accountability processes within the Israeli military in decades, amid growing political and public pressure to reveal the extent and responsibilities for the security failure that led to the October 7 attack.
The acting head of the Military Intelligence Directorate, Major General Shlomi Bender, who served as commander of the Operations Brigade, received a command memo on October 7 and requested to retire from the Israeli army upon the end of his current service.
This comes in the wake of the Chief of Staff's decision regarding personal conclusions and leadership steps following the army's failure before and during the Hamas attack.
The relevant leaders were summoned, each separately, to hold urgent meetings expected to end before evening hours, amid widespread controversy within the military establishment.
